How to Choose the Right Modular Clean Room for Your Application

A modular clean room is an efficient and flexible solution for creating controlled environments that meet specific industry needs. When choosing the right modular clean room for your application, it’s important to thoroughly assess your unique operational requirements and determine the features needed to maintain the proper cleanliness levels.

From the flooring and ceiling to wall panels and more, each component plays an important role in ensuring your clean room aligns with both functionality and regulatory standards. To help guide your decision-making process, this post will cover the key factors to consider when selecting a modular clean room for your operations.

What is a Modular Clean Room?

Modular clean rooms are constructed from pre-fabricated materials, such as wall and ceiling panels, pass-thru chambers, and airlocks, which are built to meet your unique specifications. These clean rooms can be customized to meet your specific application and classification requirements, offering flexibility in design.

Depending on your needs, modular clean rooms can be free-standing or integrated into your facility’s existing structures. They can also incorporate existing HVAC systems and other equipment. Modular clean rooms can feature either hard walls resembling conventional construction.

Considerations When Choosing a Modular Clean Room

When choosing the best modular clean room for your application, it’s crucial to consider the following factors:

  • Flooring. Different industries require different types of flooring in their modular clean rooms. Common flooring options include vinyl, epoxy,  and non-slip rubber, each of which offers unique advantages for durability, chemical resistance, and ease of cleaning. Regardless of the type of flooring, it’s important that it be level and non-porous to ensure the clean room’s integrity. Special floor coverings can also be included for added protection.
  • Walls. Common wall materials include stainless steel, glass, aluminum, fiber-reinforced plastic, vinyl-covered gypsum, and other high-performance materials that inhibit contamination. In addition to material, you can also choose whether you want the walls to be solid or include windows/glass panels for visibility.
  • Sealing (Pressurization). Depending on your application, you will require a clean room capable of maintaining positive or negative pressure. Positive pressure ensures clean air flows outward to prevent contaminants from entering, whereas negative pressure keeps contaminants confined within the clean room to protect the outside environment. In either situation, all doors, windows, and wall seams should be properly sealed to ensure consistent pressurization.
  • Ceiling Systems. Modular clean room ceiling systems can accommodate air diffusers, HEPA filters, and various types of lighting fixtures to facilitate proper air circulation and cleanliness. T-grid ceilings are a popular choice, as they allow panels to be easily removed for maintenance or reconfiguration.
  • ISO Classification. Clean room classes include ISO 1 (most clean) through ISO 9 (least clean). Generally, the more stringent your ISO classification, the more expensive your clean room will be, as it will require more specialized equipment to maintain proper cleanliness levels. Understanding your ISO classification can prevent you from spending too much on a clean room you don’t need.
  • Design Complexity and Additional Features. Modular clean rooms can feature more complex designs to accommodate additional features such as gowning rooms, static control, process piping, fume hoods, sprinkler systems, and much more. Having a thorough understanding of your requirements will point you towards which features are right for you.
